Lindsey Graham, Donald Trump, and the Papal Conclave: A Convergence of Politics and Faith

Lindsey Graham, Donald Trump, and the Papal Conclave: A Convergence of Politics and Faith

The recent death of Pope Francis has not only been a major event for the Catholic Church but has also become entangled with the political stories of major U.S. leaders, particularly President Donald Trump and Senator Lindsey Graham. Their behavior and words throughout this time provide a special window into the intersection of American politics and international religious events.

Trump's Papal Ambitions: A Mix of Humor and Strategy

With his typical sense of humor, President Trump made light of a desire to replace Pope Francis, saying it would be his "number one choice."  Although obviously in jest, the remark highlights Trump's penchant for being in the center of public conversation.  He also voiced his support for New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan, pointing to Dolan's presence at Pope Francis's funeral and their history together, including Dolan's attendance at Trump's second inauguration.

Even with Trump's support, the possibility of an American pope is still low.  Analysts indicate that the College of Cardinals, largely appointed by Pope Francis, will likely favor a successor who carries on his legacy of reform and inclusiveness.  Possible candidates like Cardinal Luis Tagle of the Philippines and Cardinal Pietro Parolin of Italy are seen as more likely candidates.

Graham and Trump's Diplomatic Engagements in Rome

Both Trump and Senator Graham traveled to Pope Francis's funeral, where they joined a multitude of world leaders to pay their respects.  The funeral also provided the backdrop for diplomatic meetings, including a closed-door meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The two leaders discussed tactics to attain a ceasefire in the conflict with Russia, with Trump suggesting that stronger sanctions could be imposed if fighting continues. Senator Graham also reiterated this, supporting bipartisan trade sanctions against countries buying Russian products.

The Changing Dynamics Between Trump and Graham

Senator Graham's relationship with President Trump has been one of alignment and divergence. Originally a vocal critic during the presidential campaign of 2016, Graham's position changed after the election, as he became one of Trump's strongest supporters. He has repeatedly come to Trump's defense on policies and decisions, citing their common perceptions of national security and foreign policy.

Yet their partnership has not been without tension. Graham publicly rebuked Trump's hesitation to endorse a federal ban on abortion in April 2024, prompting a chain of negative remarks from Trump. Through all these differences, however, both men have succeeded in holding a working relationship, frequently reconciling differences due to political necessity.

Conclusion: A Confluence of Faith and Politics

The convergence of Pope Francis's funeral and the political games played by Trump and Graham shows the intricate fabric of world affairs in which religion and politics have a tendency to intersect. Their actions at Rome are not simply expressions of personal beliefs but calculated moves in the continually shifting horizon of international politics and domestic politics. As the Catholic Church sets about choosing a new leader, the world looks on, aware that such choices reverberate well beyond church doors, affecting geopolitics and the dance of world leadership.
